I was driving through Marina Del Rey last month, and saw some baseball diamonds from the road, with the fencing falling down onto the fields. The light was right and I figured it could hold some photographic merit, so I pulled a U-turn, crawled under a fence, and started wandering. From a distance, I saw two vagrants pitching baseballs to each other on the adjacent field, and figured that photographing the situation could be extremely regrettable or equally memorable. I walked up as one of the men disappeared, and offered to throw some pitches to a man named Marv. He was happy to be photographed, but likely unhappy about my erratic pitches. I was pretty confused about my delight in photographing the event, but it hit me as I drove away. I'm not too into taking pictures of strangers, and have never found photographing the homeless to be beneficial for either party. However, the pull for me was Marv's delight in playing baseball and the universal appeal of athletics.

On a high from that evening's events, I went to the gym the next day. I work out at The Yard in Hermosa Beach, which hosts a number of high profile professional athletes in their off-seasons. Doing ploy-ball hamstring curls, I turned my head to see World Series winning pitcher Brian Wilson (he of the famous beard) warming up alongside me. One day you're pitching to a bum in Marina Del Rey, the next day you're within sweating distance of a man who threw the last pitch in the World Series. Life is weird sometimes.

I asked Bobby Barber when he came to Santa Monica Pier for the first time. He answered "1929." Bobby has raised a volleyball family, and his son, Mark, coached Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes to the 1996 Olympic gold medal.

Fred Souza has overcome tears in his shoulder, a torn patellar tendon, and whatever the hell that massive scar on his stomach was from.

The Seawright tournament is held at 28th Street in Hermosa Beach, and as you can tell from the group of snapshots, it's been going on since at least '85.

My grandmother, Muzzy, goes on walks every morning - at about 6 am. She does this on two artificial knees. When I was visiting them in Ohio, I was manning the BBQ and hanging around the garage, when I saw what looked like a bird-feeder/bong. I gave it a whiff, and it was indeed a device used to smoke marijuana. I asked Muzzy where she got it, and she said, "Well I found it on the side of the road, and thought it looked interesting, so I brought it home!" So no, Muzzy doesn't have glaucoma.

Finally got up to Northern California, to visit my family and do a little recharging. Hit up the essential spots like SF MOMA, the galleries of 49 Geary, Alotta's Deli, the Google volleyball courts, grandma's house in Menlo Park, & my brother's new pad in Campbell. Lots of artists stoked the fire within after yesterday's trip to SF. Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan's Evidence, Charley Harper's super futuristic animal drawings from the 1960s and 70s, Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud's Bay Area Figurative Movement works, and Katy Grannan's new work, Boulevard, which I'll talk about in a future blog. Good to be back in the presence of piano-playing street performers, the rude receptionist at Stephen Wirtz gallery, the very pleasant staff of Modernbook, and the chugga-chugga hum of Caltrain.

Last night the AVP announced that the 2010 season has been stopped, and there's no immediate plan to have a professional tour in America. It's hard to express how tragic and devastating this news is for the beach volleyball community. Last night we had a pot-luck at the Volleyhouse in Venice, and everyone looked like they'd just seen a ghost. The pain was briefly subdued by fresh peach, mango and banana sorbet, but when you're in bed realizing that every other moment is consumed by thoughts of beach volleyball, it hits you. That's when the sadness sets in. Personally, I was starting to make great leaps in my game, and I'm not alone. There are a lot of people who have put off "real" jobs to pursue beach volleyball, and the plug has just been pulled. All I know is that I want to surround myself with fellow players to grieve.

This was my second year playing for Team Kinda Good / Fresh Brothers. If you're unfamiliar with the Manhattan Six-Man tournament, it's the biggest volleyball party of the year. The past two years our team took 2nd place, and this was our most mediocre year yet, finishing a dismal 17th. Nonetheless, it's a superb time filled with heaps of free pizza from Fresh Brothers and solid volley-dialogue from all.

Taking a portrait with a 4x5 camera is a very intimate experience. Pulling the loupe up to the ground glass to focus on the pupils, asking them to hold still as you insert the film, waiting for the right moment before you depress the shutter release. I lived 3 houses away from Chris for 17 years before really talking to him, when I took this photo a year ago. Chris passed away from cancer this week, and while I'm not sure what this photo can say about him, taking it was an intimate experience.

Eastern Shores - Virginia Beach & Belmar

Lauren and I flew to Norfolk, VA to play in the Virginia Beach AVP. We stayed with Damian + Kelley Seitz, who live on the Chesapeake Bay, which is where I took this portrait of Braidy Halverson. Amidst the current uncertainty of the AVP's future, Braidy looks exceedingly smart for holding down a full-time teaching position at Redondo High School. From Virginia Beach we headed up to Belmar, NJ in a rented Ford Fusion, where I played with David Fischer (the photo of the guy in the ocean facing the camera). We qualified, then bit the big 25th in the draw. Belmar + Asbury Park were beautiful and quaint, and gave me a vague understanding of how my mom grew up. She spent a good part of her youth in Rumson, NJ. Fischer's another soul-volley guy. No stranger to strangers' couches and a lack of showers, he recently had his Airstream re-upholstered in Mexico.
